The Missing Factor

{griffin's first church outing}

We've been cooped up in the house for the past three weeks and today decided it was finally time to break out for Griffin's first trip to church. We have a great Sunday School class that we're a part of that we've been missing, plus today was the big day for the gathering, {which is the more contemporary service we go to} as it was the first day for two services.

We told a few friends that we were planning on trying to go, but everything would be up in the air depending on a certain someone. I don't know what it is about babies, but they have a built in sensor to know when you have somewhere to go the next day, which means they have to have a short night. Griffin really slept fine last night, but was up at 1, 4 and 6:45 for feedings.  I was really tempted turn our alarms off, go back to bed and skip church at 6:45 this morning, but decided to turn on the Keurig instead and make it to church.

Back when I was still pregnant, I frequently told Cody that once Griffin was here, we would have to make ourselves get up earlier every day in order to make it places on time. He would kind of nob his head and give me a "yeah, yeah I know" attitude about it, but never seeming too excited or serious about putting this into practice.  So today, he wondered out of bed about 7:55 {his normal wake up time} and started getting ready.  I told him to chop to it and he looked at the clock and then looked back at me as if to say, "I see the time and I've still got plenty of it."

That's when I realized that mom's are always prepared for something that dad's don't seem to think about:

A blowout diaper as you're walking out the door. Getting hungry when it's only been 45 minutes since the last time he ate. Crying, for no apparent reason other than the fact that he knows we need to leave. I don't know exactly what the meltdown will be about, but there's a fear in the back of my mom mind that it's always lurking back there... just waiting to rear it's head at the worst possible moment as we are trying to walk out the door.

That's why I stayed in my pajamas until about 5 minutes before it was time to go and I made it through the last diaper change before we left the house. {can't have a fountain attack!} And why I showered last night, picked out my clothes down to my shoes and jewelry and had the overloaded diaper bag ready to go for any emergency.

Soon enough though, Cody will have the fear. I'm not sure what lesson he'll have to learn the hard way to get the fear, but it shall come! I just hope I'm there to laugh when it happens!

  1. Haha, so true. Pre-baby I used to wake up around 7a.m. and leave my house around 7:50a.m. to get to work on time. Now I get up at 5:30 or 6:00a.m. and we leave between 7:15 and 7:30a.m. It's amazing how much your life changes when you become a mom. And being prepared for those last minute melt downs is very smart on your part.
